Icon Tutorials
Two new tutorials for Photoshop CS but I think it's transferable.

Today we learn to go from this to Image hosting by Photobucket

[1] Crop your pic as usual to 100x100 (I use the Crop Tool), go to Filter -> Sharpen -> Sharpen and sharpen once. Then blur over the skin, avoid eyes, lips, ears (strength of Blur Tool 12%)

[2] Go to Image -> Adjustments -> Brightness/Contrast and adjust the Contrast to +23
Image hosting by Photobucket

[3] Dublicate the layer twice, desaturate (Image -> Adjustments -> Desaturate) both copies and set the first one to Screen, 50%
Image hosting by Photobucket

and the second copy to Soft Light, 100%
Image hosting by Photobucket

[4] Merge layers (Layer -> Merge Visible)

[5] Desaturate
Image hosting by Photobucket

[6] Dublicate and set the copy to Color Dodge and then Invert Colors (Image -> Adjustments -> Invert)
Image hosting by Photobucket

[7] Now it gets a little tricky ^-^ On the copy, go to Filter -> Blur -> Gaussian Blur and play with Radius. I set mine to 5,0 pixels

[8] Add your text and voilà

And for the second tutorial (because scout78 asked so nicely ^-^) we go from this and this to Image hosting by Photobucket

[5] Now use the Blur Tool (Strenght: 100%) and blur carefully over the seat on the right side of the icon until it's smooth
Image hosting by Photobucket

[6] Now take the second pic and repeat step 1 to 4.

[7] Then drag the pic over your first and move it until her face is over the seat
Image hosting by Photobucket

[8] Go to Layer -> Add Layer Mask -> Reveal All. Use the Gradient Tool (the Black, White gradient) ON the Layer Mask from the left to the right.

[9] You will see that her face and her arm overlap. Use the Brush Tool again ON the Layer Mask to erase some of Elizabeth's face.
Image hosting by Photobucket

[10] Set the layer to Overlay, 50%
Image hosting by Photobucket

[11] Dublicate and set to Screen, 100%
Image hosting by Photobucket

[12] Dublicate again and set to Screen, 75%
Image hosting by Photobucket

[13] Merge layers (Layer -> Merge Visible)

[14] Dublicate. Go to Image -> Adjustments -> Photo Filter and choose Sepia, density 100%. Then set the layer to Soft Light, 80%
Image hosting by Photobucket

[15] Add your text (Comic Sans MS, size: 11pt, tracking: 50) and a border
Image hosting by Photobucket

Other icons made with this technique Image hosting by Photobucket and Image hosting by Photobucket

Finished ^-^ Questions? Comments? Just ask. I don't bite ;)

Again, you rock with the how-tos. I've been in icon heaven doing my own little tributes to "The Princess Bride" and "That 70's Show". You've inspired me to be more creative with my icons. Okay that's a lie, but still....at least I'm doing something. *giggle*
